Responsive Web Development is the technology through which a website can be accessed on all platforms including Mobile Phones, Desktops, Laptops and Tablets. Read on to know in detail.

Responsive web developmentWith the fast changing technological environment, Responsive Web Development has become inevitable for a successful online business model. Hitherto internet was accessible only on computers, but with the advent of mobile devices and smart phones, it can be now accessed on a host of hand held devices.

Today, mobile phones have become a part and parcel of our daily lives, with their usage growing at a tremendous speed. Moreover, Google has started including responsive websites in its search algorithms, with non-responsive web sites going down in rankings. In this scenario, Responsive Web Development is the key to succeed in the ongoing competition which is increasing by the day.

A Responsive website is one which can work on every device and every screen size, no matter how large or small, mobile or desktop, providing a gratifying experience to users. Moreover a responsive website has complete cross browser compatibility, i.e. it seamlessly opens up on any browser including chrome, firefox, safari, explorer, opera etc.

Another closely related term to ‘Responsive design’ is ‘Adaptive design’, with a little difference between the two. A Responsive design is one which is capable of reacting quickly to any change, while and Adaptive design is one which can be easily modified for a new purpose or situation. While Responsive websites seamlessly change based on different factors, the Adaptive ones are built to a group of preset factors.

For best results a proper combination of Responsive and Adaptive design is ideal, which provide the perfect formula for functional and technologically strong websites.

A Responsive design has three components – Flexible Layouts, Media Queries, and Flexible Media. The Flexible Layout calls for page element sizing to be in relative units like percentages, rather than absolute units like pixels or points, making the layout capable of dynamically resizing to any width. Media Queries allow the page to use different CSS style rules based on characteristics of the device the site is being displayed on, most commonly the width of the browser. Flexible Media ensures that images are also sized in relative units, so as to prevent them from displaying outside their containing element.

In view of the ever increasing platforms for accessing the online media, Responsive Web Development has emerged as the core component of effective internet marketing and SEO.
